Transform Your Life

Back in 2011, I was living with a chronic illness. I’d been struggling with debilitating ill health for years, and when my consultant offered me the option of surgery, I thought it was my way out.
I believed the operation would fix everything, that I’d get back to work, back to living my 100-miles-an-hour life, and all would be well.
But I was wrong.
Instead of getting better, I needed more surgery, which left me with nerve damage and permanent disability. Suddenly, my life changed completely. I had a hospital bed at home, I needed round-the-clock care, and I was relying on a cocktail of medications just to manage the pain.
I had a hospital bed at home, I needed round-the-clock care, and I was relying on a cocktail of medications just to manage the pain.

After 20 years together, my husband and I separated. I had to leave the family home, my business partnership ended, and the hardest part was not being able to care for my two children, who were just 8 and 5 at the time.
My mother, a pensioner who lived 200 miles away had to move in to take care of me and the children. The toll it took on her was enormous.
Every part of the life I had built was gone. Everything I’d worked so hard for disappeared overnight, and with it, my sense of self.

I pinned my hopes on a consultant who specialised in my condition. I’d already been through countless tests and treatments, desperate for some kind of answer. But after that appointment, I left with a crushing sense of finality.
What I heard, or at least how it felt to me, was that nothing more could be done, that this was my life now: living with disability and pain, and that my best option was to enrol in a pain management programme.
It felt like the end of the road. I was told this was my life now. But it didn’t feel like a life at all. I wasn’t living, in fact I was barely existing.

And yet, even in that darkness, I have a vivid memory of sitting on the train on the way home from that appointment, thinking: I’m not letting that in. I have a choice.
I could accept the diagnosis and stay trapped in that cycle of pain and hopelessness… or I could look for another way forward. I decided not to let the diagnosis be the final word.
It hasn’t been easy. I’ve made mistakes. I’ve had setbacks. But through learning, experimenting, and refusing to give up, I found ways to move myself to a far better place.
Today, I’m living a life I couldn’t have imagined back then. In those days, I couldn’t even turn over in bed, let alone get out of it. I didn’t know night from day, and I needed help just to make it to the bathroom.
Now, I wake up with purpose, I live with meaning, and I get to help others do the same.
Looking back, I can see that my illness and everything that followed became the catalyst for change. As painful as it was, it forced me to stop living a life that wasn’t truly mine and nudged me onto the path I was meant for.

Sometimes pain, illness, or struggles with mental health aren’t just symptoms to be silenced, they can be the body’s way of speaking to us. They might be trying to tell you that something in your life needs to shift. Urging you to slow down, to listen, and to consider a new direction.
If you’re still reading this, I’m guessing it’s because you’re in pain, or you love someone who is, and something in my story resonates with you. If you’re in pain, I want you to know this: pain may feel like it’s stolen your life, but it doesn’t have to steal your future.
Yes, focusing only on pain can lead to unhappiness, hopelessness, and regret. But when you choose to learn, to explore, and to take action, you open up the possibility of becoming who you were always meant to be.
You have wisdom inside you. You have strength inside you. And you can use both to move towards your true purpose and identity.
Because you can.
